Scholarship award ceremony livestreamed – Stream1 broadcasts ceremony at LMU Munich

280 LMU Munich students had every reason to celebrate: they were awarded the coveted Deutschlandstipendium. A large award ceremony with over 400 people in the large auditorium was not feasible due to Corona. But to honour the students’ deserving achievements and the support of their sponsors, the Ludwig Maximilian University moved the ceremony to a stylish livestream. If the students can’t go to the award ceremony, we at Stream1 will bring the celebrations to their homes in their living rooms.

Tenth anniversary of the Deutschlandstipendium at the LMU

Everyone involved was in a particularly celebratory mood this evening: this was the tenth time that the Deutschlandstipendium was awarded at the LMU. The award ceremony was accompanied musically by the Munich band “Like a Lady”.

Honouring achievement and commitment

The Deutschlandstipendium supports students with 300 euros per month for a period of one year. The scholarship is awarded in recognition of excellent performance and above-average commitment. The scholarship holders come from all over the world: from Bolivia, America and Namibia to China and Russia. What they have in common: Their studies at the LMU.

Party mood in the livestream thanks to virtual boxes and six cameras

Of course, the ambience is different from that at an award ceremony on site. But we can also create a festive mood among all participants in the livestream.
Behind this is high-quality technology and experienced livestream professionals. We have thought of something special for the festive setting: the scholarship holders as well as the sponsors will take part in the award ceremony in eight virtual boxes. For this purpose, we connected 280 students in three boxes via Zoom, as well as more than 70 sponsors from foundations, private individuals, companies, associations and churches. This meant that a maximum of 49 people could be seen per monitor. We filmed the stage and the virtual boxes with 6 PTZ cameras so that the connected participants were an active part of the livestream. The celebrants show their joy on the screens with green flags and pennants.

Cooperation with our partner Qualimero

For a livestream of this size, you need Man Power. That’s why we cooperate with our partner Qualimero from Riemerling. Among other things, the event technology company provides the lighting in the large auditorium and takes care of the special effects.

Livestream on YouTube

For encoding we use the Mine Media Q8. Thanks to the Livestreams encoder, we stream the awarding of the scholarships live and without interruption on YouTube in 1080p with 25 frames.

State-of-the-art technology for the broadcast

For those who want to know exactly: this streaming technology and operators were in use for us:

Concentrated work of our livestream directors during video transmission

Remote film production before the event

Four films about the Deutschlandstipendium, the motivation of the sponsors and the joy of the scholarship holders provide variety in the livestream. We made these recordings in the run-up to the award ceremony. We were directly on location at the LMU for one shoot and interviewed the participants via Microsoft Teams for the other films. All four films were professionally edited, the sound was corrected, colours were adjusted and music was added. We also designed matching belly bands.

We set the stage perfectly for the Munich band “Like a Lady” with modern lighting technology.

Great feedback: professional livestream ambience

Especially important for us afterwards: the constructive feedback of the participants. How was the event received by the audience? What did they particularly like? And the feedback was consistently positive! Among other things, the participants praised the virtual boxes, ‘The idea with the videos of the participants on the various monitors creates a live feeling’, the organisation in the run-up, ‘We were very impressed by the organisation and implementation and can only imagine how much work and preparation must have gone into it’, and the technology, ‘The quality of the sound and image was also perfect. How did you manage to pull it off so well in the large auditorium?’. The clips produced in advance were also very well received by the audience: ‘The many videos of scholarship holders and sponsors that were shown were particularly exciting’. Of course we are very happy about this great feedback and would like to thank all participants. Special thanks go to Ms Alejandra Riedmiller, programme coordinator of the Deutschlandstipendium at LMU, and all those involved at the university.
