Passion fruit or coffee? Which beer flavour do you prefer? – “I beg your pardon?”, one or the other may now ask. For Mareike Hasenbeck, beer sommelière and craft beer lover, this question is not unusual. For our Stream 1 managing director Martin, a newcomer to the craft beer scene, however, it is. The perfect prerequisite for a lively Craft Beer Tasting by the two of them at the premiere of the Stream1 Live Talk on Linkedin – directly from our Livestream Studio Munich.
What is Craft Beer anyway?
The term craft beer originally comes from the United States. Anyone who produces beer in small quantities by hand and independently of a large corporation is considered a craft brewer. But not only the taste is original, the labels also set new standards: from brewing werewolves to a feel-good landscape with a surfboard – the creativity of craft beer producers knows no bounds.
But do craft beers even comply with the Bavarian Purity Law? You bet they do! According to the famous law, which dates back to a decree by Wilhelm IV in 1516, beer may only contain water, malt, hops and yeast. But with over 200 hop varieties, more than 500 malt varieties and 200 yeast strains, there are countless ways to brew a good beer according to the purity law – including intense craft beers whose taste is reminiscent of fruit or coffee.
Fun Fact: While general beer sales in Germany are stagnating, the market share of craft beers is steadily increasing. So beer tasting is the perfect topic for the first Live Talk – because livestreaming is also becoming increasingly popular, as we all know.
Cheers from the Livestream Studio Munich!
Mareike once discovered her passion for beers as a Focus journalist at an event about American beers. She is now a trained beer sommelier and runs her own beer blog feinerhopfen.com. During the tasting, the beer expert enlightens Martin about myths – for example, a beer from a can is of higher quality than the same bottled beer thanks to its opacity – and tells with a smile how she once tasted over 100 beers as a juror.
Host Martin Prankl also visibly enjoyed the tasting and responded to the numerous questions from the audience, which Mareike answered with expertise and humour.
And what is Mareike’s favourite beer? She doesn’t have a classic favourite beer, she reveals, but in summer she particularly enjoys light, hoppy beers, while in winter she prefers an Imperial Stout.
Thank you, Mareike, for your time and expertise.
